My seventeen-year-old daughter, Bailey, is a junior at
Brookline High School in Del Mar, California and plays on the school’s soccer
team. The first game of the season they lost a “heart-breaker” when the
opposing team scored a goal with fifteen seconds left off of, in my opinion, a
very disputed penalty kick. Today the team is playing Torrey Pines High School,
one of the better teams in the league. Bailey is worried if the team loses and
goes 0-2 they could very well have no chance of making the playoffs this season
as several other teams in the league are expected to go undefeated, including Torrey
“Bailey, honey, don’t worry about the game,” her father
advised at the breakfast table. “You and your team have trained long and hard
for this season.”
“I know, Dad, but to lose your opening game has taken the momentum
out of the team.”
“Bailey, this is your job as team captain,” I stated as I approached
the table holding a cup of Kemosabe French vanilla flavored coffee. “You have
to motivate the team,” I added. “Talk to them before the game. Put some of that
“killer instinct” you have into them.”
“Hum, that French vanilla flavored coffee smells delicious,”
Bailey stated. “Can you give me a thermos to take to school? I got to run now.
I have to finish getting dressed because Paul will be here in ten minutes to
pick me up,” she stated, referring to her boyfriend, Paul, who drives her to
school every morning.
Ten minutes I handed Bailey the thermos of French vanilla
flavored coffee she asked for. “Motivate the team!” her father called out as
Bailey turned away from the kitchen table and headed for the front door to meet
her boyfriend who was waiting in his car outside the garage.
“With a win today against Torrey Pines your team will have
the exact same records,” I added.
“Thanks, guys,” Bailey yelled back as she extended her hand
toward the front door door-nob.
“We’re just trying to give you some advice,” I called out as
she opened the door.
“You have,” Bailey stated as she turned to face me holding
her thermos of French vanilla flavored coffee up towards me. “This French vanilla
flavored coffee is positively uplifting.”
