Being a grandparent is a fun time in your life. You get to enjoy the company of children without much of the responsibility. You have the opportunity to be a positive, supportive, caring person in a childís life, but since you donít get to see them every day, you have to nurture that relationship. Here are some ways you can make your grandchildren love coming over to visit.
1. Always have a delicious cup of hot cocoa waiting.
A hearty mug of hot cocoa is the perfect way to spend time together as a family. Thereís something about a warm a mug between your hands and good company at the table that just feels like home. Our Sippity Lite® line is perfect for kids; itís delicious, low in sugar and gluten free. Use this as a regular treat so your grandkids look forward to the visit.
2. Donít try to parent.
As much as you want to help raise responsible, hardworking people, that isnít your role anymore. Always defer to your children so the chain of command stays intact. When your grandchildren visit, you donít want them to feel like now they have to mind four parents.
3. Overindulge just a bit, but do it equally.
Itís fine to dote on your grandkids just a bit. At this point in your life you probably have a bit more free time on your hands and youíre financially steadier than you were twenty years ago. You wonít spoil them by spending a few dollars when they visit, just make sure to treat each child equally.
4. Skip the toys, focus on activities.
When you have the opportunity to take a day with your grandkids, donít rush to the toy store and fill your cart. If you want to spend quality time with them, choose activities. Take them to the zoo, museum, library, carnival or aquarium. You could also pick up a craft or project to work on together. Whatever you do, keep in mind that the goal is to create a memory.
5. Share your hobbies.
When your grandkids are visiting, donít follow them around doing whatever they want to do. Show them your hobbies and interests as well. Teach them what it was like when you were younger. You might be surprised to learn that you have more in common than you think.
6. Get online!
A lot of communication takes place these days online, especially among the younger generations. Learn how to use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms so you can enjoy the company of your grandkids wherever you are. Comment on their photos, share their content and participate as much as you can.
7. Invest in something together.
Working towards a common goal is an effective way of bringing people together. Come up with a project for you and your grandchildren to complete together so they feel emotionally invested in your relationship. This could be a complex puzzle, a garden, or (depending on their age) a construction project. With winter nearing a wonderful indoor project is to construct a birdhouse, which your grandchild will cherish for years to come.
