I began writing this blog with the intention of addressing making holiday memories. I was going to write about attending a play with your family (The Nutcracker or Messiah & Bach), or attending a neighborhood tree lighting ceremony, or if your truly daring, to go caroling.
But then I stopped and thought, "What truly have been the perfect holiday memories?"
While we all have wonderful memories of our Children rushing downstairs yelling, “Santa came, he came! Santa came!” or the look on a loved one’s face after they opened that special gift you got them, or watching the excitement of your children getting dressed for your traditional family Christmas Eve dinner.
The common denominator of all these memories is the feeling of happiness and joy your heart experiences from this act of kindness.
So this holiday season, if you truly wish to experience some perfect holiday memories that are out of the ordinary, don’t just walk through Grand Central Station looking at the homeless. Stop and give them $10 and tell them, “Go get something warm to eat.”
Or go to a grocery store in a disadvantaged neighborhood and pay $25, $50 or $100 (whatever you can afford) towards the grocery bill of the person behind you.
Or do likewise with a young mother in Walmart waiting at the checkout line who most likely had to work 25 hours overtime the week before to earn $200 so she could shop for her four children’s Christmas presents, or hand a pair of tickets to see the Rockettes at Radio City to a mom who, because it’s all she could afford, has simply taken her young daughter to Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas Tree.
Look deep into the eyes of the people you give these gifts of kindness and you will never forget the looks on their faces and the feeling in your heart. THESE are the perfect holiday memories.
