new york talkAsk any person from New York City and they will tell you they grew up on the streets of the city. In growing up you develop a slang vocabulary that regardless of your subsequent formal education you find yourself using in conversation from time to time.

Boragard - Term used when someone “hogged” something they were assumed to have shared, i.e. soda.

Comere - Come here.

Derdy, Derd & Derd - Thirty-Third Street and Third Avenue.

Da Bronx - The Bronx.

Dimo - A dime.

Facial - A term used to define an annoying friend.

Fin - A five dollar bill.

Fahgettaboutit - A word used when a person doesn’t wish to talk further about a subject. They wish to forget about the subject under discussion.

Gonna - I’m going to.

Hang a Louie- Make a left turn.

Hay Kemosabe- A welcome greeting to a trusted friend.

Howyadoin? Greeting to a friend, which simply means "hello" (although you don’t really care how they are doing).

Humidosie - Term used to define an extremely humid day.

Hero - New York term for a grinder, hoagie, sub or wedge sandwich.

I’llcallfaya - a statement made to a friend when you will later go to their house and see if they can come out.

Jonesing Ourselves - the term used to state that you are going to JonesBeach for the day.

Magumbo - Requesting a little “sugar” from your loved one.

Quincy - A quarter.
