Pulotto - A Christmas Eve Game

Pulotto - a family Christmas gameLate Christmas Eve... that magical moment in time when children around the world go to bed excited and dream about Santa.

That moment in time that radiates deep into our inner soul and transcends the silence of the night into hope, joy and peace on earth.

And yes, that moment in time when the adults gather around to play Pulotto.

Pulotto is a game my wife and I created two years ago with our four grown children as the last event of Christmas Eve. It is purely a game of chance that is sure to bring the whole adult family together and a game where the loser of the first stage of the game could become the big winner at the end of the game. For four people to play Pulotto you need:

  • Four $1.00 children’s jigsaw puzzles (Cinderella, Spiderman, etc., with no more than 30 pieces) each wrapped in Christmas paper and placed in a box.

  • Four scratch-off lottery tickets in denominations of $20.00, $10.00, $5.00 and $2.00. each placed in a plain white envelope and placed in a Christmas stocking.

The game begins with each participant sitting at one side of the kitchen table. Next, the youngest child randomly selects a wrapped jigsaw puzzle from the box and places it in front of him on the table. Each child then follows (if you wish to spruce the game up a bit, purchase jigsaw puzzles with odd shapes to make for fierce competition).

On the “Go” command, each child then hastily un-wraps their jigsaw puzzle, places their pieces in front of them and begins to assemble their puzzle as strategically and quickly as possible.

The order of finish determines who picks first from the Christmas stocking containing the randomly wrapped lottery tickets envelopes. With a sealed envelope placed in front of each child, the second “Go” command signals each child to open the envelope and begin scratching their lottery ticket. While all participants are winners, the winner of game is determined by the winning value of the ticket.

Pulotto - A family game of chance, fun, competition and excitement and that game that is sure to become a Christmas Eve family tradition.
