Sharing Life's Experiences as a Mentor

Posted by Southwest Beverages on 1/22/2015
Sharing Life's Experiences as a Mentor According to Greek mythology, Mentor is the son of Heracles and Asopis and a friend to Odysseus’ son, Telemachus. When Odysseus, King of Ithaca, left to fight in the Trojan War, he entrusted Mentor with the care of his palace and education, care and well being of his son. Accordingly, mentor has become known as someone who shares their general life experiences (or specific life experiences, as the case may be) with another person (protégé) who is, often than not, less experienced-often a younger person.

The mentor relationship with the protégé can be either a formal one, where the mentor belongs to a formal organization or an informal one. While I never belonged to a formal mentoring organization I have had the opportunity over the years to mentor colleagues, students, youth who have gone astray, friends and my children on an array of subjects ranging from what classes shall I take in my first year of college to, how to finance my first house, to when should I sleep with my boyfriend, to I want to be the CFO-guide me.

In sharing my life experiences with my protégé the first thing I always do is to understand their needs (behavioral, financial, career, intellectual, etc.). Once these needs are understood I then can then begin to share my technical knowledge, wisdom, success, guidance, assistance, etc. with the protégé, so that the protégé gains my respect, trust and confidence knowing that I can fulfill their needs.

While I am extremely proud of the many people I have mentored over the years in various capacities, I would like to highlight one person in particular since January is national mentoring month. Accordingly, I would like to introduce you to Laura Gallagher, who, in my opinion, defines the meaning of an, “extra-ordinary person”. Laura is a passionate, career oriented, nursing professional who has successfully advanced her educational goals from Medical Assistant to Licensed Practical Nurse to Bachelor of Science-Nursing, Registered Nurse and is now attending the University of Arizona as a candidate for a Doctorate degree in Nurse Practitioner with a specialty in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care. In addition, in the five years Laura worked at Life Care Center of Tucson she demonstrated her leadership and management experience such that she has been promoted three times. So what makes Laura “extra-ordinary” relative to other people who have taken the same academic and career path? Laura has done it the “hard way”. By “hard way” I mean Laura is a product of inner Tucson, who was raised by a single parent, her hero Mom, and who “put” herself through school every step of the way, most notably by commuting 120 miles each way for 4 years after working 8 hour shifts at Life Care of Tucson to attend the University of Phoenix to earn her Bachelor’s degree in nursing, and who has sacrificed her personal life by studying endlessly for the sake of developing her academic career AND who has done all this while raising a daughter as a single Mom. Yes, I acted as Laura’s mentor, but the fact of the matter is that Laura has achieved her results all on her own through her dedicated commitment to her high standard of excellence. Laura Gallagher, truly an “extra-ordinary” person.
