Today when I left for school my Mommy was sad. Every morning
she starts her day by brewing a pot of coffee and making my lunch. Today her
coffee pot broke and I know she does not have money to buy a new one because
last week she told me I would “have to wait” to get new sneakers. The whole way
on the bus to the Rosewood Elementary School I couldn’t stop thinking about my
Mom and how I could help her. Suddenly an idea came to mind.
“Mikey, Joey, Craig I need your help,” I stated as we sat at
our assigned seats in the school cafeteria.
“What’s the matter? Joey asked.
After I told them about my Mom's broken coffee pot I asked
each of them if they would give me their milk money so I could buy my Mom some
coffee. Not only did each of them give me their milk money, but they began to
ask our other 4th grade classmates. That day I collected $6.35.
While I appreciated their contributions I need at least another $5.00 to get my
Mom a box of Kemosabe gourmet flavored instant coffee.
As soon as the bus dropped me off at my house after school,
I ran inside and emptied my piggy bank. I put all the change from the bank into
one of the plastic lunch bags my Mom puts my lunch in together with the $6.35
of change my classmates gave me. I stuffed the bag in my backpack, got my bike
and road to the nearby supermarket.
I got my Mommy the Kemosabe flavored collection box of
gourmet flavored instant coffee this way she could enjoy all of the
flavors-mocha, chocolate cinnamon, chocolate hazelnut, irish cream and French vanilla.
When I got to the checkout register the man scanned the box then said, “11.95,
son.” I handed the man the plastic bag with all my change. It took him a few
minutes to count and separate the coins, then he said, “You have $11.10. You
need another eighty-five cents.”
I began to cry. Suddenly, a voice from behind said, “I’ll
pay the difference.”
When I turned, I saw a woman holding a dollar in her hand
extended toward the cashier. “Thank you. Thank you so much,” I stated wiping
the tears from my eyes.
Twenty minutes later I arrived home where my Mommy was
sitting in her favorite chair reading a magazine. “Here, Mommy, I got you a
surprise,” I stated as I approached her.
“Kemosabe gourmet flavored instant coffee,” she stated as
she looked at the box. “Why are you giving me a box of coffee?
“Because I know how much you love your morning coffee and
today when I went to school you were so sad because your coffee pot had broken.”
For the next two minutes my Mommy hugged and kissed me
