I met Jake at the Spark’s Spanish Springs Library where last
month’s Northern Nevada chapter of the Gold Association of America monthly
meeting was held. I have been a member of the chapter for the past six years
and a novice weekend prospector during which time I have discovered elbaite,
amethyst, green uvarovite, black andradite, red-pink grossular and, of course,
gold and silver. This weekend I invited Jake to go prospecting with me at Rye
Patch State Recreation Area, just northeast of Lovelock to pan for gold.
After hiking three miles of fairly rigorous terrain we
arrived at our claim site for the weekend.
“I’m glad you told me to bring plenty of water,” Jake stated
as we rested on two large rocks, referring to the fact that the temperature had
already reached 83 degrees and was forecasted to go to 98 degrees by late
afternoon. “Here, Billy,” Jake said as he handed me a thermos cup full of what
I thought was cold water, but was actually iced chocolate hazelnut flavored sugar
“Wow! This coffee smells delicious,” I stated as I took the
cup and held it up to my nose.
“Nice and cold,” Jake injected.
“Unbelievable, Jake!” I stated with enthusiasm after I had
taken the first sip. “And you say its sugar free coffee?”
“It’s actually Kemosabe sugar free coffee. It contains less
than one gram of sugar and comes in six delicious flavors-mocha, chocolate
cinnamon, French vanilla, crème butterscotch, chocolate irish cream and, of
course, the chocolate hazelnut. I drink it all the time.”
After I had taken several more sips of my coffee I looked to
Jake and stated, “We haven’t even begun to pan yet and already I have
discovered a rare luxury-this Kemosabe iced chocolate hazelnut sugar free
Over the course of the weekend Jake and I panned a little
over a third of an ounce of gold, worth about $415.00. Not bad for a weekend.
