For my first two years of high school my grades were mostly
C’s with an odd A or B. This past semester I have been studying really hard,
not so much to satisfy the pressure from my parents, but because I realize that
if I want to go to a good college I had better have good grades.
“Paul, your mother told me your grades come out tomorrow,”
my father stated as we were finishing our dinner.
“That’s right, Dad, tomorrows the big day,” I sarcastically
replied leaving him with an impression of low expectations.
“Well, I hope you took to heart the discussion we had last
summer about college.”
“Well then, can we plan on sitting down tomorrow before
dinner and going over your grades. I should be home by 6 PM.”
Shortly after 3 PM the next day I walked into the kitchen,
smiling from ear to ear, and presented my mother with my report card. For the
next minutes my Mom studied the report card then looked up at me and proclaimed,
“WOW! Four A’s and one B plus.” She then extended her arms and gave me a big
hug. “I’m so proud of you, Paul,” she stated while nearly squeezing me to
death. “I have to call your father right now and tell him the good news,” she
happily stated as she began to walk towards the phone.
“No, Mom. I want to surprise him when he comes home.”
At 5:45 PM my Dad called my Mom and told her he would be
home just after 6 PM. My Mom quickly made three glasses of Sippity chocolate
marshmallow flavored iced hot chocolate because she knew that that was my Dad’s
favorite drink and it would put him in a good mood to go over Paul’s report
“Alright, young man,” my Dad stated moments after he had
taken a seat in his favorite recliner and my Mom handed him a glass of iced hot
chocolate. “May I see your report card?” he asked in an authoritative tone.
“Before I give it to you, Dad, I want you to know that I
studied really hard this semester and went for extra help on Tuesday and
Thursday after class to improve my intermediate algebra grade.” I then put my
glass of iced hot chocolate on the table, got up and walked towards my Dad. My
Dad took a sip of his ice hot chocolate then placed his glass on the table. “I
tried so hard, Dad,” I stated as I handed him my report card.
After what seemed like an eternity, but in reality was no
more than fifteen seconds, my Dad looked up at me with a big smile on his face
and proclaimed with excitement and joy in this voice, “Outstanding!
Extraordinary, Paul!” Holding my report card up, he looked to my Mom, “Helen,
have you seen this! He even got an A in intermediate algebra!” Smiling, she
nodded her head with a tear in her eye. “I’m so proud of you, Paul” my Dad
added as he got up to give me a hug. “Your hard work has paid off,” he added as
he embraced me.
“This calls for a toast!” My Mom called out seconds after my
Dad had released me from his embrace. Raising her glass of iced hot chocolate Mom
said, “To our son, Paul, who has worked so hard to bring home the best report
card of his life. We’re proud of you.” We all then clicked our glasses of iced
hot chocolate together and had a drink.
“Keep getting grades like this and you’ll be going to the
University of Arizona in eighteen months!” my Dad happily stated looking at me
with a big, proud smile on his face.
