For the past three summers I have played second base on our
company’s softball team, Young’s Electrical. As a result of finishing first last
year in the silver league our team has been moved up to the gold league, which
is the most competitive league in the Cleveland City softball program. To date our
record is 9-2 and we are two games out of first place. Tonight we are playing
the first place team, TCR Bookkeeping. If we can win we will be only 1 game out
of first place at the halfway mark of the season.
“Are you almost ready,” I stated to Wayne,” my co-worker and
first basemen on our softball team referring to the fact that I was anxious to
leave work and head on over to the softball field. “This is our biggest game of
the season so far and I don’t want to be late,” I added.
“I just have to call Park Place Café and order fifteen containers
of iced Kemosabe flavored gourmet coffee.”
“What’s that for?”
“The team. I thought I would treat them to some delicious
cold iced flavored gourmet coffee before the game starts.
“That’s really nice of you, Wayne.”
“It could be a game changer tonight,” he replied referring
to the fact that it was 92 degrees and humid and that the iced coffee could
provide the edge the team needed to feel refreshed and thereby win.
Five minutes later we were in the elevator headed down to
the lobby and across the street to the Park Place Café.
“Hi Wayne,” the manager of the café stated when he walked
in. Your order is just about ready. There putting the lids on the containers
“Let me ring you up while we’re waiting. You had ordered
three containers of iced mocha flavored gourmet coffee, four containers of
chocolate cinnamon flavored gourmet coffee, four french vanilla, and four iced
containers of chocolate hazelnut flavored coffee.”
“Perfect, Billy,” Wayne replied to the manager.
After Wayne had paid Billy we left the café each holding a
cardboard tray with the containers of gourmet coffee-Wayne’s tray had eight
containers and mine had seven.
To make a long story short, TCR was ahead most of the game.
In the bottom of the seventh inning with one out and two men on base I came to
bat. The first pitch was a ball. The second pitch I fouled off down the first
base line. The third pitch I hit over the right center wall for a “walk-off”
three run home run that won the game for us, 7-6. When I rounded third base I saw
the whole team waiting enthusiastically for me at home plate, Wayne in front with his
arms extended towards me. No sooner had I stepped on the plate than Wayne had
his arms wrapped around me and my teammates were jumping on top of me. “I told
you the iced flavored gourmet coffee would be a game changer,” Wayne started as
the weight of the team on top of me pushed me to the ground.
