As the Vice President of marketing for Gramm Publications, I
have an extremely busy life. Between having the responsibility for the monthly
publication of six national magazines and managing a family, which consists of
my husband, Dan, and two wonderful Children-Jason, 9 and Sydney, 7 quality time
with my children is precious time. Dan and I try our best to balance our family
lives with our professional lives, but it is hard especially since Dan’s job
requires him to travel out of the country weeks at a time. Thank goodness for
our live in au pair, Nancy, who has been with our family now for the past four
“Nancy, are the kids dressed and ready to go?” I asked on my
cell phone as I hailed a taxi on 42nd Street and Madison Avenue just
outside my office building. “I should be home in about twenty minutes, that is
if the rush hour traffic lets me.”
“Yes, and they are so excited that you are going to take
them to the park to play,” Nancy answered, referring to the fact that we were
going to the Diana Ross Playground on the west side of Central Park, a short
two block walk from our three story brownstone on West 83 Street.
“Can you do me a favor and prepare a container of iced Kemosabe
crème butterscotch instant coffee for me?”
“No problem, Lisa, it will be ready when you’re ready to go
to the park. See you in a few.”
An hour later, upon the first site of the park, I watched as
Jason and Sydney ran towards the wooded jungle gym, the center piece of the
park, which is modeled after the 1870’s old west buffalo play sculptures and
animal footprints. For the next half-hour I let Jason, play with Sydney on the jungle
gym while I enjoyed my iced container of Kemosabe crème butterscotch instant
coffee. As I watched my children play it struck me that the only time I play
with my kids is every Friday night in this park. I was missing them grow up. After
I had taken the last sip of my crème butterscotch instant coffee I decided it
was time for a life style change so that I could have more quality playtime
with my kids.
“Come on guys. Let’s go on the tire swing,” I called out to
my children as they chased me running toward the tire swing my hair blowing in the
wind and the empty container of creme butterscotch instant coffee in my hand.
For the next hour I played with my kids enjoying every moment
of it. That Monday, I resigned from Gramm Publications.
