Every Thursday night for the past ten or so years I ran a
card game at our club on Delancy Street in Brooklyn. All the senior guys in my
crew-Carmine, Joey, Johnny and “stuttering” Al-looked forward to the game
because it was a night out away from our wives. The game usually began about nine and lasted,
well, sometimes all night, depending on how “kind” the cards were. Each week
one of us was the designated dealer. Tonight was my turn. After three hours of
playing my cell phone rang, interrupting my dealing. “Al, I need you to do me a
favor,” I called across the room. Al quickly dropped his cards, came across the
room to meet me and listened to my instructions. He then left leaving Carmine,
Joey and Johnny to continue the card game.
“Hit me,” Carmine said to the me after he pushed two of his
five cards towards me, referring to this request for me to give him the next
two cards from the deck. After Carmine received his cards he placed them in his
hand of cards, looked down at them, took a sip of coffee from the container of
Kemosabe chocolate hazelnut flavored decaf coffee he had been “nursing” for the
past forty-five minutes, then looked up and stated, “I’ll see your fifty and
raise by another fifty.”
“Joey?” John asked, after he took his cigar from his mouth. “Are
“Yah. I’ll see your fifty and raise by one-hundred,” Joey
answered, as he looked to Carmine.
“I’m out,” John stated, throwing his cards facedown into the
middle of the table. “This is too steep for me.”
Throwing a hundred-dollar chip into the pile of chips in the
middle of the table, Carmine stated, “I’ll see your hundred, and,” pausing for
a moment to take another sip of his coffee, he added, “like this coffee, boys,
I’m all in.” He then pushed all his
chips to the center of the table and looked towards Joey.
“What do you mean, like this coffee, I’m all in?” Joey curiously
“This coffee,” Carmine stated holding up the container of
coffee, “Kemosabe gourmet flavored decaf coffee, contains all the ingredients I
need for me to enjoy a well-balanced container of coffee. Not like you, Joey,
who, every time your girlfriend brings you a cup of coffee we have to stop the
game so that you can measure the exact amount of sugar and creamer you need.
Kemosabe coffee contains the exact amount of creamer, sugar and flavoring I
require. And Joey, unlike your coffee that is making you jittery because it
contains caffeine, Kemosabe gourmet coffee is 99.9 % caffeine free, so I stay
calm and collected when I need to be. Like now. Are you in?”
“No, I’m out, but I’m all in for Kemosabe coffee next
Thursday night when I’m gonna win back what I just lost to you.”
